Now that it’s April, Spring is officially in the air!  April showers, May flowers, aaaaand spring home refresh! Something about this season brings with it a sense of renewal and rejuvenation.  And I’m a firm believer in your residence being a place where you can do just that. Sprucing up your space is a great way to add to your joy factor – especially in the main hub of your home, the kitchen.

One of our favorite ways to add interest to an existing kitchen is to customize the island. Take a look at this enormous black island that we completely transformed in our Summerville project. We said goodbye to the speckled granite and replaced it with this gorgeous veined quartz.

Then our skilled contractor built out the base of the island and added some gorgeous trim in a herringbone pattern and painted the entire base Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black. And, of course, the acrylic & brass counter stools by Gabby Decor capped it off quite nicely.

In this Coastal Chic Villa project, our client wanted her island to look more like a piece of furniture.  Adding these ornamental tiles paired well with the dark navy trim on the island base. The beautiful blonde hardwoods complemented this look nicely, and we can’t wait to show you the final look with natural woven counter stools and black metal ceiling pendants to complement the matte black cabinet hardware.

Sometimes the kitchen island can even pull off the look of an actual table.  In our Upscale Urban Guesthouse project, our clients wanted the feel of a giant kitchen table for entertaining family & friends that come to hang out.  A perfect spot for mixing drinks and gathering for the game, we warmed up the space that is based on our polished concrete floors, by adding a huge butcher block island countertop.  Our skilled carpenter created legs on the island bottom to help it feel open, while the Palecek counter stools lend a comfy & stylish place to roost.  And we would be remiss if we did not showcase these fantastic concrete pendant lights by Visual Comfort that really finished off the urban vibe of this kitchen island space.

Customize your kitchen island
One of my favorite features of remodeling a kitchen is a customized kitchen island. Here in Florida, we thrive in our “Great Rooms” where we basically combine at least three spaces into one: kitchen, family room, and dining area. So, wrapping the island with decorative moldings or adding an accent tile inset to the front can make it feel more like a unique piece of functional furniture, rather than just a cold, sterile food prep space. Choosing a calming, neutral countertop will allow you the option to paint the base with a pop of contrasting color (I suggest black or navy) then finish it off with fun light fixtures and counter stools, and you have a showstopper on your hands.
